Now look, I like bananas.
They are also, aesthetically, quite a-peeling.
I also like Duct Tape (can you see where this is going...?)
Let me elaborate.
To me, Duct Tape is the 'King' of tapes: sturdy beyond belief; adhesive to most surfaces; shiny; practical.
We're talking, stick-your-bumper-back-on-after-you've-been-rear-ended-practical. Attach-a-bridegroom-to-be-firmly-to-a-lamp-post-practical.
It's starred in a thousand films. It's gagged hostages, heroes, villains... been of critical importance in time machines...
And a banana is... well it's very nutritionally dense. Useful, I'd say.
So hats off to the 'artist' who has recently combined them in his celebrated artwork, "Comedian".
Who would have guessed that simply taping a banana to the wall would result in £4,000,000's worth of art, and just as many column inches to cover it.
Of course, it has divided opinion (like a lot of good art). Did you know the buyer didn't even get the banana at the end of the auction? Just the instructions for how to tape it to the wall.
I thought, "I reckon I could do that, even WITHOUT instructions. Duct Tape is VERY user-friendly.
Anyway, unlike the fruit-market vendor who hasn't stopped crying since realising that he sold a £2,000,000 banana for 75p, I was very much inspired to join in the fun.
What he doesn't seem to realise is, today's flavour is tomorrow's bog paper, and soon his banana may be only worth £1,000,000, for example. A calculation which has, in fact, inspired my latest piece, "B.O.G.O.F."

And this final piece, "The Critic" is a critical reimagining of what might happen if the banana's most sophisticated appreciator came face-to-face with this delicate work.
